A media asset is a container or shell that contains your content in Viostream.
When we talk about media assets in Viostream we are referring not only to your video or audio file, but to all the transcoded formats, metadata and accessible content that may be associated with it.
It is the media asset that you distribute - either by adding to a channel, embedding in a web page or sharing to social media sites - rather than a single file.
The life cycle of a media asset
Upload source file | Add metadata | Distribute |
---|---|---|
This is where you upload your video or audio file. Viostream then transcodes your file to the formats and qualities defined in your Viostream account. | This is where you enter a title and description for your asset and associate channels. You can begin adding metadata as soon as your upload is complete - even while transcoding is in progress. | This is where you make your media asset available to viewers - either by adding to a channel, embedding in a web page or syndicating to social media. |
About transcoding
In order for your content to be accessible to the widest possible audience, Viostream transcodes your source video (or audio) file into a number of preset formats and qualities. These presets are set by your account manager and customised to your specific needs.
Presets are created by Viostream and are based on the optimal rates and formats for a broad range of devices and users. If you require custom presets please contact your Client Services Associate. Professional services fees may apply.
In most cases there are five presets:
1. 288p 600kbps
2. 432p 900kbps
3. 540p 1500kbps
4. 720p 2000kbps
5. Audio
These presets define the container, video codec, profile, bitrate, bitrate control mode and the audio codec, bitrate, sample rate and channels.
When you upload a source video file, Viostream automatically transcodes your file into these formats and stores them as part of your media asset.
The player then uses adaptive streaming to adapt to the requirements of the device and quality of the network to deliver a seamless viewing experience to the viewer. For example, a user viewing a video in a browser with a high speed broadband connection will be presented the Desktop High output, while a user viewing the same video on a mobile device with a slower than average 3G connection, will be presented the I output. Neither user is required to select a format or quality, the player detects their context and adapts accordingly.
About media asset status
Every media asset has a status. The status controls the availability of the media assets and the actions available to the user. The media asset's status appears in the media list. Statuses include:
Status |
Description |
---|---|
Online |
The media asset is available for distribution. After upload and transcoding your media asset status is Online by default. |
Processing |
The media asset is transcoding. It is not yet available for distribution. You cannot delete a media asset while it has a status of Processing. |
Offline |
The media asset is not available for distribution, either it is still uploading or its publish date is in the future. |
Expired |
The media asset is not available for distribution as its expiry date is in the past. . |
